I can’t believe my eyes when I read this article written by Isabelle Kerr. In this article she is putting down the use of what she calls slang and is trying to say that ” slang ” is ruining English language. I believe she is just talking nonsense, the reason for her undermining slang must be simply because she can’t understand it. She reminds me of a primary school child who through’s a strop and sulks because they cannot understand something. She goes on to say that she is embarrassed and ashamed in fact she even goes as far as to apologize for being a member of the younger generation.
What she fails to realize is that she should be proud and hold her head high by being part of this generation because ” Slang ” is actually and intelligent adaptation to English language. It gives people short cuts to saying words also it gives people an easier understanding to a word or a phrase for instance if you’re texting someone and they say something funny its hard to express how funny it is over text messaging. Replying ” lool! ” rather than ” that was funny ” adds more emphasis and makes the other person know that it was funny.” Slang ” can be used in many ways, if your with your friend and he/she makes a rubbish joke , instead of laughing if you say ” lol ” it adds sarcasm and makes the other person know the joke was not funny. ” Slang ” is like coded language that’s why I think Isabelle is against it , its only natural to be against something that you can’t fully understand. ”Instead of creating words to improve our ability to communicate and express ourselves, these words simply promulgate an unhealthy culture obsessed with being seen in the right places and knowing who’s doing what.” This quote from the bare vexed article is insane because if it weren’t for slang English language would be harder to master.
It is a fact that slang improves people’s ability to communicate with other people so Isabelle statement on that point is terribly wrong. For example young children don’t know certain words such as talented and sarcastic. Using the slang word ” Sick ” explains talented in just one word and if Isabelle is saying that slang is not improving people’s ability to speak then she is wrong.
‘Regardless, the future of the English language looks bleak’ I completely disagree with this quote that she said because I believe slang is helping the English language and the more common slang is the brighter English language will be. The future of English language looks bright right now because slang is being accepted and introduced into dictionaries. Adding slang words to dictionaries helps people understand slang words and It does people a lot of favors for people who was not brought up in that type of language. However Isabelle clearly disagrees with me as she said ‘These recent additions to the dictionary certainly do us no favors’ If it does us no favors how did she know the definition of twerk ? When some people saw the video on Miley Cyrus twerking people were confused as to what that meant however the dictionary did people favors including Isabelle by explaining what it meant. As I am brought up in that language I automatically knew what it meant it is a type of dance but Isabelle found the exact definition ‘dance to popular music in popular music in a sexually provocative manner involving thrust hip movement and a low squatting stance’ If Isabelle is saying that words like this in the dictionary do not do us any favors then she is incorrect because if this word was not in the dictionary many people would be confused as to what dance Miley Cyrus was doing.
”Shakespeare will be turning in his grave” What a powerful statement if you ask me. Shakespeare is the king of slang in my eyes because he has created words that did not make sense in his time and now these words are part of the English dictionary. Some of the most common words in the English dictionary were made by him addiction, amazement, champion, gossip and lonely. There were all made by Shakespeare and to be honest if I put down all of the words he has created we would have a whole paragraph of just words. Our generation are to a certain extend inspired by Shakespeare and we are trying to mimic what he did in his time and mimic by the way is another word created by Shakespeare. Shakespeare would be partying in his grave because of all the work we have done in terms of language.
Slang is a quick, sufficient and simple way to communicate with people. Slang is also very intelligent, it managed to take out all the vowels from seriously ‘lool’. Srsly though ask a ten year old child what the word colloquial means and it would have there heads spinning. However ask a ten year old what slang is and he/she would now what your talking about.

It’s going well, Latwaan – try to break your ideas into separate paragraphs so your argument structure becomes clearer. Also include a wider range of quotes from Kerr’s article to demonstrate that you’ve read it fully and understand her arguments (this is part of the assessment)

The main focus needs to now be on small errors – the correct use of punctuation and capitals is a good start. A good piece of writing will be crippled by the mark scheme with these errors present.

Respond to a few more points that Kerr makes in her article (for example, her point about Shakespeare at the end is ripe for criticism). Fix your spelling and punctuation errors – and you’ll go up at least a grade.
